Arrest made in 2003 Beloit murder

Earlier today, Charles “Chuck” Ray Fleming, 46, was arrested on a charge of First Degree Murder in the death of his mother, Carol Fleming, which occurred on August 16, 2003 in Beloit.

Fleming was arrested by the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Department and is being transported to Mitchell County by Beloit Police Chief Dave Elam and Mitchell County Sheriff Tony Perez.

Beloit native and Lenexa, Kan. resident Chuck Fleming

The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department and Beloit Police Department continue to work on this joint investigation.

A first appearance hearing before the District Magistrate Judge will be scheduled once Mr. Fleming is booked and processed in Mitchell County. No further details will be released at this time.

In the early morning hours of August 16, 2003, a 911 call came into the Mitchell County Law Enforcement Center reporting that Carol Fleming had been shot in the head at her residence in Beloit.

Evidence was collected and submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation Laboratory in Great Bend, Kansas. There were no significant results which could help identify a suspect at the time. An extensive investigation continued which, unforeseeably at the time, would last the better part of 15 years before Chuck Fleming was arrested yesterday as a suspect and is expected to be charged with first degree murder upon his return to Beloit.

A reward of $5,000 had been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals who committed this crime. It is unclear as of today whether law enforcement received information from anyone which helped ignite the cold case.
