East Cruises to 50-12 Win In Division II All-Star Game

In Saturday’s 8-Man DII All-Star Game, the DII West All-Stars took a 6-0 lead early, but it was all East from that point, as the East squad scored 50 straight and finished with a 50-12 victory.

After Dighton’s Isaac Torson recovered a fumble for the West at the East 15, the West needed just two plays and their drive was capped by a 14-yard touchdown run by Jacob Salmans of Hodgeman County.  Just 1:28 into the game, the West led 6-0.  However, the East would answer on their next drive, as Central Christian’s Nate Heneha scored on a six-yard TD to tie the game at 6 with 5:46 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Nobody would score the remainder of the first, but the East broke the game open in the 2nd quarter.  With 5:34 remaining in the first half, Davante’ Hammer of Pike Valley connected with Hanover’s Kevin Diederich on a 21-yard TD pass.  Hammer added a two-point run to give the East a 14-6 lead.

The West was forced to punt on their next possession.  The East struck again with 3:46 left in the half on a 12-yard TD pass from Hammer to St. John’s/Tipton’s Ty Brummer.  Heneha scored on the two-point run to stretch the East lead to 22-6.

The West had to punt yet again on their next drive, opening the door for another East score before halftime.  With 1:05 left in the 2nd, Heneha scored his second rushing touchdown of the game, going in from six yards out again.  A missed two-point attempt left the score at 28-6 at halftime in favor of the East.

The West was driving on their first possession to start the second half, but their attempt to score was thwarted by an interception from Pleasanton’s Tayler George.  Starting at their own 25, they went 55 yards in eight plays, scoring on a 5-yard TD pass from Hammer to Brennan Zabokrtsky of Hanover.  A failed PAT kept the score at 34-6 until the 4th quarter.

The East would strike first again in the final quarter.  Heneha threw his first touchdown pass of the day, connecting with Wakefield’s Shane Jackson on a 26-yard pass.  Hammer added the two-pointer to give the East a 42-6 lead with 9:10 remaining.

After yet another West punt, the East took over on the West 34 and went 34 yards in four plays, capped by Heneha’s third TD run of the game, this time from 17 yards out, after he had scoring runs of 28 and 33 yards called back due to holding penalties.  Heneha hit Brummer for the two-point conversion to give the East their biggest lead of the game at 50-6 with 4:46 remaining.

On their final drive of the game, the West would fight for pride.  The 65-yard, nine play drive ended with a 24 yard touchdown pass from Salmans to his Hodgeman County teammate Trevor Morgan.  The PAT run failed as the lead was at 50-12 with just 41 seconds remaining for the East.  The East ran out the clock with two knees and went on to win by the 38-point margin.

The win for the East made it the second straight year that the East has gotten a sweep at the 8-Man All-Star Games after the DI East won 58-6.  The DII East extended their all-time series lead to 11-7 over the West.
